Marshall Hill Road is experiencing severe erosion of the material beneath the roadway pavement, called subgrade, and the embankment of the adjacent hillside. The affected portion of the roadway is located approximately 1000 feet east of the intersection with Cronk Rd. For safety, this portion of roadway is currently restricted to one-lane with temporary stop signs in either direction.
In the short term, Whatcom County Public Works is in the process of hiring a geotechnical engineer to assess the immediate safety and stability, recommend permanent stabilization measures to prevent further damage, and allow normal use of the roadway again. It is anticipated that Whatcom County Maintenance and Operations crews will perform this work.
