Alan Chalfie is a senior deputy public defender who has been with the office for 16 years. He began practicing criminal defense as a law student at the University of San Francisco where he interned at the Bayview-Hunter’s Point Community Defender, and clerked for one semester at the criminal division of the California Supreme Court.
From 1981 to 1994, Mr. Chalfie was a public defender in northern California where he tried approximately 100 jury trials. Many of those cases involved serious felony charges, including sexual offenses, homicides and capital murder. Following 10 years as a private criminal defense and dependency attorney, he resumed work as a public defender in Washington, where he continues to handle serious felony cases.
