Cable Street Reconstruction / Geneva Stormwater Project moving forward on time
Collectively called the Geneva Stormwater Improvements, it means residents will get a new Cable Street that includes sidewalks and bike lanes, and new stormwater facilities that will filter run off before it enters Lake Whatcom.
Work began May 1st, 2007 and is about half way to completion. Workers have already replaced the storm drainage that will drain storm water into a filter system. Curbs and gutters, a couple of retaining walls and the storm drain vault are next. Following that will be the paving of Cable Street, installation of a lighted crosswalk and later in the Fall the landscaping.

Whatcom County Public Works Project Engineer Kirk Christensen says removing the rock and the number of utilities that had to be moved were a challenge. “With every job there are some unforeseen circumstances that come up” Christensen said.
The June rain didn’t hurt the construction timeline and the project is on time. The project will be completed within the Lake Whatcom Watershed construction window.
The Whatcom County Executive has made public safety and improving the water quality of Lake Whatcom a priority. “These projects in the Geneva neighborhood will improve the safe school route, make the street safer and improve water quality in the lake. All that runoff will now be filtered before it drains into the lake. I appreciate the patience of the area residents and the affected commuters”. Kremen said.
