Disposal
Although we have no open landfills in Whatcom County we currently lease property to three separate transfer stations at Birch Bay, Cedarville, and Point Roberts. A fourth site on private property in Lynden is open to the public. Disposal of solid waste is carried out by private enterprise by four separate haulers through agreements with the county.
Closed Landfill Monitoring
Through contract, the closed Cedarville and Y Road landfills have ongoing programs for ground and surface water monitoring and gas monitoring. Cedarville only has leachate collection removal and disposal. This is done to comply with state/federal/local guidelines for closed landfill sites and to ensure that proper procedures are carried out to minimize any potential county liability due to previous public waste disposal services being provided.
