The Solid Waste Division of Public Works is responsible for waste prevention, economically efficient recycling and disposal systems, litter control, hazardous waste education and disposal opportunities, and the monitoring of the county's closed landfills. We also provide support for the Solid Waste Advisory Committee. This division achieves these goals through the administration of several Washington Department of Ecology (ECY) grants and contracts with other agencies. Funding for the Solid Waste Division is provided by the collection of excise tax on garbage hauled by certificated haulers, as well as by various Department of Ecology grants.
