Volunteer / Internship Opportunities

Probation Officer Intern: Students enrolled at a Junior or Senior level of college may apply with Juvenile Court Administrations’ Probation Division. The internship must be for a period of two quarters, for at least 16 hours per week. Interns will be matched with a Juvenile Probation Officer and learn the day to day functions of probation.

CASA Volunteer: A CASA is a trained volunteer child advocate sworn in by the presiding Superior Court Judge to represent the best interest of children who are abused and neglected and have an active dependency case in Juvenile Court. CASA volunteers investigate the child’s circumstances, provide fact-based information, and make recommendations to the court.

The Whatcom County CASA program is a division of Whatcom County Juvenile Court Administration and works closely with the child’s family, the Court, social workers, therapists, attorneys, care providers, and other professionals involved in the dependency case. CASA volunteers work under the direct supervision of the CASA Coordinator

Community Accountability Board: Youth involved in diversion proceedings may be referred to a CAB for imposition of a sanction for violation of the law. The boards are made up of volunteers from the community who listen to the youth’s version of the event which resulted in their referral to Juvenile Court. The CAB then imposes a sanction appropriate for the offense. Northwest Youth Services provided recruiting and training for the CABS.
