Food
safety is important to each member of our community because
food-related illnesses can have negative impacts. The CDC
estimates that 76 million Americans get sick annually from
foodborne illnesses.
In Whatcom County, there are over
1,000 permitted permanent food establishments, including
restaurants, food and espresso carts, coffee shops, delis
and grocery stores. These facilities have trained food
workers, managers and staff who have passed the food worker
training
test. These facilities are also inspected, using the Washington
State Board of Health Rules and Regulations for Food Service-WAC
246-215 (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/), to ensure safe food
handling practices in Whatcom County. Whatcom
County has 4 health inspectors. These inspectors also offer
educational
presentations.
What other services does the Food Program offer?
