Monday, April 21, 2008
- Whatcom Community College will be hosting films in celebration of Earth Day.
Other events:
- Monday - 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. “The Global Banquet: Politics of Food” explores the impact of globalization on food systems. It will be shown in Syre 104.
- Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. “The Future of Food” looks at unlabeled genetically modified foods and their appearance in grocery stores. It will be shown in Heiner Theatre.
- Western Washington University
Monday - “The Dawn of Green: Manchester, Thirlmere, and the Roots of Environmentalism,” starts at 5 p.m. in Science Lecture Hall 150 at Western Washington University. She also will lead a seminar, “Beasts in the Jungle (or wherever)” at noon Tuesday at WWU. For further details on this seminar, contact Mart Stewart at Mart.Stewart@wwu.edu. Both events are free and open to the public.

- Whatcom Community College
2:30-3:30 p.m. “Broken Limbs: Apples, Agriculture and the New American Farmer” is one filmmaker’s journey to document his father’s struggle to continue as an apple grower in Wenatchee. It’s a fate shared by thousands of apples growers who are going out of business. It will be shown in Heiner Theatre.
- Village Books:
National Public Radio correspondent Doug Fine talks about his hilarious attempts to live green during a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday appearance in Bellingham. He is the author of a new book, “Farewell, My Subaru” ($24, Villard Books).

- Whatcom Community College
1:15-2:15 p.m. “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil” looks at how Cuba switched to low-energy farming practices to feed its people after losing access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s. It will be shown in Syre Auditorium. Details: 676-2170.
Western Washington University invites the community to hear some lectures related to Earth Day.
Harriet Ritvo, a history professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will lecture about the beginnings of the environmental movement, which grew out of an attempt in mid-1800s England to develop a famed lake into a water supply.

Is organizing a work party for Whatcom Creek in Maritime Heritage Park, on Holly Street near C Street. It will run 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
- The Annual Whatcom County Earth Day Garage Sale is a big opportunity to recycle.
Help keep everyday stuff out of the garbage stream by shopping at the 8th annual Whatcom County Earth Day Garage Sale. The event runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 and 27.
