Whatcom County's Voting System:  How We Vote

How To Vote With Your Vote-By-Mail Paper Ballot

Your ballot will arrive in the mail approximately 20 days prior to Election Day.

TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE OR ISSUE ON THE BALLOT: Use either Blue or Black ink. Do not use a felt tip pen or pencil.

CONNECT THE HEAD AND TAIL of the arrow that points to your choice with a single line as shown.

  • Both Sides: You ballot may contain contests on both the front and back. Review both sides.
  • Overvote:  More than one vote for an office or ballot measure will be an overvote and no votes for that office or measure will be counted.
  • IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE:  Draw a line through the entire candidate’s name like this:

John Doe       You then have the option of making another choice if you wish.

  • Do not: erase or use white-out to correct a ballot.
  • Do not: cut or deface the shape or size of your ballot.
  • Write-In: To vote for a person not on the ballot, connect the arrow and write in the name of the person on the line provided.

NOW REMOVE THE TOP STUB AND PLACE YOUR BALLOT in the enclosed "Secrecy" envelope and seal. Do Not make any identifying marks on this envelope. Place the sealed secrecy envelope in the return envelope.

YOU MUST SIGN the voter affidavit on the return envelope in order for your ballot to be counted. All signatures are verified upon receipt in our office. You will be contacted if there is no signature or if it does not match YOUR signature on file.
