Can I fax my application materials to HR?
No. We do not accept faxed applications. Your signed application must be received in Human Resources by the end of the business day on the closing date.

If a position has been listed on your website for a long time, are you still taking applications for that position?

Yes. We take applications through the closing date for job listings currently open for recruitment and listed on our job opportunities page. Occasionally, listings say "on-going recruitment." In these instances, we will accept applications until the position has been filled.

Do you keep applications on file so that I do not have to turn in a new application each time I apply for a position?

No, you need to submit a separate 4 page Whatcom County application and any supplemental application materials for each position you wish to apply for. However, photocopies of your application are acceptable, provided the position title, date, and signature lines have been updated, and the signature is original. The appropriate supplemental application, if applicable, must also be included.

What materials do I need to submit to apply for a current job listing?

In addition to the application, you may be asked to submit a resume, cover letter, answers to supplemental questions, driving record abstract, or other materials. Review the job announcement carefully for instructions. If your application packet does not include all requested materials, it will be incomplete and will not be considered for the position.

Should I include a resume and a cover letter?

Review the job announcement. Depending on the position, a resume and/or cover letter may be required or optional. Please note, a resume cannot be accepted in place of a required application. Do not state "see resume" in any section of your application, as this will be viewed as an incomplete application and removed from further consideration.

May I submit an application after the closing date on the job listing?

No. Only applications received by by the end of the business day on the closing date will be considered. Whatcom County does not accept faxed applications, or applications received after the closing date, regardless of the postmark.

What happens after I turn in my application?

All applications are screened by Human Resources and forwarded to the hiring department for review. A number of qualified applicants may be invited to participate in additional selection activities such as job-related tests and interviews. The review process may take two weeks or more. The actual hiring process may take up to several months, depending on the position and the level of background screening and pre-employment testing required.

How can I check the status of my application?

The status of closed jobs will be posted on our website, which is routinely updated with current information.  Generally, if you have been selected for an interview or testing you will be contacted within two to three weeks of the closing date. If the status of the position you applied for is beyond the "Reviewing Applications" phase and you have not been contacted, you have not been selected for further consideration. The status of closed jobs page is generally updates on Fridays.

If I applied for a position, will I receive an interview?

Unfortunately, due to the number of applications we receive, we cannot interview every applicant. All applications are reviewed for qualifications in the context of the other applications received. A number of qualified applicants may be invited to participate in additional selection activities such as job-related tests and interviews.
