Signs & Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of active pulmonary / laryngeal and extrapulmonary disease include a TST or IGRA result usually positive,  and a chest radiograph is usually abnormal. However, it may be normal in persons with advanced immunosuppression or extrapulmonary disease.

Respiratory specimens are usually smear or culture positive. However, they may be negative in persons with extrapulmonary disease or minimal or early pulmonary disease. People may spread TB bacteria to others and will need treatment for TB disease.

Symptoms may include 1 or more of the following
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Chest pain
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Hemoptysis
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite
