The Bellingham-Whatcom County Commission Against Domestic Violence has 28 members.
  • 1 Chief Executive and 1 Police Chief from the cities in Whatcom County other than Bellingham, selected by a majority vote of the eligible police chiefs
  • 1 domestic violence victims service provider
  • 1 health care provider
  • 1 representative of a major employer
  • 1 superintendent from the school districts in Whatcom County selected by majority vote of the eligible superintendents
  • 2 human service providers, including but not limited to:
    • Clergy or religious leaders
    • Early childhood education providers
    • Educators
    • Victim or offender services
  • 2 representatives from the community at large
  • City Attorney
  • City of Bellingham Police Chief
  • Court Administrator
  • Designated representative of DSHS/DCFS
  • Director of County Health Department
  • Municipal Court Administrator
  • Public Defender and Director of District Court Probation
  • Sheriff
  • Whatcom County Prosecutor

The Commission develops and implements a coordinated comprehensive domestic violence plan that is monitored, evaluated and updated on a regular basis. It promotes coordinated and increased collaboration of institutions, systems and services as they respond to offenders, victims, children and others who have been impacted by domestic violence. The Commission works to increase community awareness and understanding about domestic violence, and serve as an advisory board to local government agencies and the community with respect to domestic violence issues. It develops community benchmarks for monitoring domestic violence and preparing an annual report, and serves as a community forum on domestic violence and create a mechanism for identifying issues, concerns, needs and resources.
